The Perils of Outsourcing to India - Read This Now
Tuesday, November 30th, 1999Let me start off by first making it clear that I am not against saving a little money, but I am against getting an inferior product or service. The old adage of you get what you paid for rings true here. While outsourcing may not be a bad idea in general, using a low rate source typically is. Since my expertise is in web design and search engine optimization I will discuss these areas.
The advantages:
You may be able to save some money on the initial design or campaign:
You will not need to have an in-house web designer or SEO specialist.
You will be helping develop the industry in another country.
The disadvantages:
The money you may save on the front will be more then made up in the frustration you will experience trying to communicate to someone 5,000 miles away who may speak like the drive through attendant at McDonalds.
The amount of time wasted going back and forth on the design, and additions you may want will more then delay your project.
The web site updating is typically only able to be done by them and thus your hourly rate will increase.
The time delay between the USA and India will mean that what ever changes you may need will be started two days after you request them.
Keeping your project in the US, will add revenue to our economy and keep some poor unfortunate designer in business.
I am not saying that this option is not a good option for some, just that in my experience I have not seen it turn out well. Although my scope is limited to web design and internet marketing, I am only reporting what I have seen in my field.
